Medical Device Prototyping & Functional Prototype Development

A prototype should answer an engineering question-not simply look like a finished product. We design, build and refine medical device prototypes to investigate mechanisms, fit, ergonomics, component integration and selected functions before the next development commitment.

Build to Learn. Test to Improve.

A promising concept can behave very differently once it becomes physical. A mechanism may bind, an assembly may be difficult to access, or electronic and mechanical components may not fit together as expected. Purpose-built prototypes help reveal these issues while design changes are still practical.

iNSPIRE Design supports prototyping from early proof-of-concept models through more integrated functional engineering prototypes.

The build method and level of fidelity are chosen around what needs to be demonstrated or measured - not around making every prototype as polished as possible.

Our Capabilities

Medical Device Prototyping Capabilities

Prototype Strategy & Evaluation Objectives

Define which assumptions, product functions and practical constraints the prototype must explore; identify what the prototype will and will not demonstrate.

Proof-of-Concept Prototypes

Build focused experimental models to assess core ideas, mechanisms, geometry, packaging or feasibility before committing to a complete device.

Alpha & Integrated Functional Prototypes

Develop engineering prototypes that combine selected mechanical functions, structures and subsystems to investigate how the intended design behaves.

High-Fidelity & Demonstration Prototypes

Create more representative form, interaction or integrated hardware when appropriate for user feedback, engineering reviews or stakeholder demonstrations. Fidelity does not imply clinical suitability.

Fabrication & Assembly

Use suitable methods such as 3D printing, machining, fabricated parts and purchased components, selected according to the purpose of each build.

Bench Evaluation & Iteration

Carry out agreed engineering checks, record observations and update the design to resolve prototype findings and inform the next build.

Define the question.

Decide what the prototype must show and how success or failure will be judged.

Set the right fidelity.

Select form-only, mechanism-focused, functional or integrated prototype approaches.

Design and fabricate.

Develop required CAD, manufacture or source parts, and prepare the build.

Assemble and evaluate.

Assess defined functions, fit, handling or integration and document relevant findings.

Iterate with purpose.

Refine the design and recommend the next prototype or engineering activity.

Different Prototypes, Different Decisions

We help select a prototype approach that matches the development question:

Proof of concept: is the underlying mechanism or principle workable?

Form and ergonomic model: how does the size, grip, access or physical layout feel?

Functional prototype: does the selected mechanical function operate as intended under the agreed evaluation conditions?

Integration prototype: can the key hardware elements work together within the intended package?

High-fidelity demonstrator: can the concept be communicated and reviewed with realistic form or interaction?

Who Benefits from Prototyping Support?

Clinician-inventors

Translate a clinical observation or early invention into something tangible for engineering discussion.

Medical device startups

Reduce uncertainty around a product concept and focus development effort on important technical questions.

Established device teams

Investigate a redesigned part, mechanism or subsystem before approving broader changes.

Research and engineering teams

Create custom experimental hardware and engineering prototypes for defined studies.
